MapBox
Overview
MapBox will be a tool to support the playing of traditional ("tabletop") wargames on a PC. It will not be tied to any specific ruleset, but will allow certain rules to be implemented to support the playing of any particular game. The main way I expect MapBox to be used is in a "play-by-email" mode.
Features of Mapbox are as follows:
- Edit and Use modes will be supported to separate the creation of maps from playing of games.
- It is not based on hex cells for positioning and movement of units. Units can move exactly the distance they need to, not some integral number of hexes.
- Distances can be measured line of sight or on the ground.
- Arbitrary sized boards are permitted. These can be zoomed and panned as required.
- Different types of information can be displayed: previous moves, future intended moves, last known location of enemy units, ...
Mapbox will be implemented in C#/.NET. Primary target system is WinXP, although I will be interested in exploring the use of (for example) Mono to run the application on Linux boxes.
